When we see people with red and swollen skin, the first thing that comes into our mind is eczema. It is a skin disease characterized by itchiness hence the skin becomes swollen and red.
The term eczema is a Greek word meaning “to boil over”. It is a kind of skin inflammation that is usually not contagious. But this type of skin problem is often hereditary, thus many members of the family may also acquire a similar problem. In fact, studies would show that there are a greater number of people all over the world suffering with eczema, more than we would normally think.
About 10 to 20% of the population all over the world is experiencing eczema. Any person can acquire eczema in their body without knowing it. Some may eventually feel itchy and flaky in their skin which will result in it being swollen and red, therefore turning into an evident eczema.
So, what are the symptoms of eczema?
As mentioned above, eczema is depicted with a swollen and red skin. The cause of redness in the skin is due to the increase of blood flow. Upon skin inflammation, the blood vessels widens and increasing the flow of blood. Another cause of redness is also due to bacterial infection where body tissues are heated and increasing redness in our skin as bacteria went deeper into the different skin layers.
Swelling is another sign of eczema. Sores may occur in the skin allowing more bacteria to go deeper in the skin layers. Often this is because of skin infection and sometimes, these wounds also contain pus and not merely clear fluid. Itchiness in the skin may act as the primary symptoms of eczema. A person with eczema may experience a lot of itch in the skin.
Thickening of the skin is also a symptom when a person has eczema. The affected skin is usually much thicker than the unaffected skin. When too much scratching occurs in the body, skin eventually starts to thicken. Often, splits in the skin are evident as the thick skin cannot easily bend.
Eczema occurs due to the unsanitary form of environment a person is living into. People living in a harsh and unclean environment may often have eczema in the body. Our skin is the protective layer that surrounds our body and defends our body from bacteria. Sometimes, irritants in our surrounding would eventually destroy our skin defenses which will allow them to have entry into our body. Eczema is triggered when these irritants are entering our body hence our skin becomes swollen and red. Even allergic reactions to dusts, soaps and even selected food as well as stress could trigger eczema.
